This study aims to analyze the development of an English-based kitab kuning learning
curriculum and its implications for the scholarly competence of students at Pondok
Pesantren Al-Khoirot. The research is motivated by the pesantren’s effort to transform the
traditional learning system of turats texts into a learning model that is responsive to global
educational demands while preserving the characteristics of salaf-based Islamic education.
The curriculum development was carried out through the translation of Ibanatul Ahkam
Syarh Bulughul Maram and Minhaj at-Thalibin into English and the use of English as the
primary medium of instruction. This study employed a qualitative approach with a case
study design. Data were collected through observation, interviews, documentation, and
analysis of bilingual kitab kuning learning activities involving students of Madrasah
Diniyah Tsanawiyah and Ma’had Aly. The findings reveal that the curriculum
implementation was conducted through rotational reading activities by students,
collaborative peer assistance, substantive explanations delivered by the kiai in academic
English, as well as discussion and question-and-answer sessions at the end of each lesson.
The curriculum development resulted in the integration of the salaf curriculum with a
global language orientation, leading to the emergence of a participatory pesantren-based
learning model. The study further demonstrates that this development contributed to the
improvement of students’ Islamic scholarly competence in understanding fiqh and
classical Islamic texts, mastery of English Islamic terminology, global academic
communication skills, and critical thinking abilities through the implementation of the
Hybrid Pesantren Curriculum and English-Mediated Kitab Kuning Learning as forms of
pesantren educational transformation grounded in tradition and globalization.
